"She's so cute. How old is she?"
The question rang in my head like an alarm.
My daughter. How old is she? I should definitely be able to answer this question.
The problem is, I have four kids, and I am forever getting their ages mixed up. And just about the time I get them all sorted in my mind one of them has a birthday!
Their mother can rattle off, not only their ages, but the ages of each of our pets, and parents as well. She's a rock star, I'm just an average dad who loves my kids.
And I DO love them, but when you look like a deer in headlights every time someone asks you their age it starts to look like you don't.
And, it's not just parents in the park. It seems like every time I turn around I'm having to write down their birthdates and years, or how old they'll be by September eighth or some such nonsense. Soccer registration, camp registration, Sunday School classes, Doctor's appointments. Never mind that I told them how old they were last year and all of that should be in their records, no, they need me to tell them again. All the while the lady behind the check-in desk is staring at me expectantly.
"How old are you?" I'll ask my son who's there to get a physical. Now my son is looking at me like I'm crazy, and the the nurse is wondering if this really is my child or if I picked him up off the street and brought them over to get a check up before I abscond with him to South America or something.
If only there was an easy way to keep track. Some way I could pull out my phone quickly and check.
"How old is my daughter you ask?" With a quick flick of my phone I can answer with confidence, "She's nine. She'll be ten in March."
